Match Report: PPA V Southampton PA – 26th June 2019
On a long and sunny evening in late June, at the beautiful St. Helens Ground (the home of Portsmouth CC) on Southsea Seafront, the two arch cricketing rivals met for a prompt 6pm start (almost), with SPA desperate to reclaim the trophy that PPA had won on that same ground the previous year.
The weather was glorious as the captains tossed the coin with Southampton opting to field first.
Portsmouth openers, Matthew Walton and Tom Foster (of Lewis Brownlee), got things off to a lively start, Tom having to join Paul Woolf and Captain Matt Shaw (Santander) in retiring once they had achieved the agreed 30 runs limit. Bruce Scott and others chimed in with a good few runs to provide an impressive total of 131 for 3.
The Southampton batsmen made a flying start with Graham Clarke hitting the winning runs to bring his team home, but not without late drama. Four wickets from PPA spinner, Ellie McMaster, gave them a shock and it went down to the last wicket as the sun started to set over the sea. Ellie was ably assisted and supported by our other debutant female player, Sultana Ali (Biscoes). Manager, Andrew Prismall, was extremely pleased to bring two more women into this traditionally male fixture.
Once the trophy had been duly handed over, a very convivial evening ensued with a barbecue and free beers, all courtesy of the match sponsor, HW Conveyancing Searches – many thanks to them for their kind and generous hospitality.
